This review is from: 2013 New Arrival: KDLINKS A100 Android Jelly Bean Dual Core XBMC Smart 1080P Streaming HD TV Media Player with Built In Wifi Support XBMC, Netflix, Youtube & All Other Apps (Electronics)

I just received this player today and felt like i had to leave a review for it.
To keep things simple, it does everything it promises to do and to my surprise even more.

I have been looking for a good device that can handle many different formats, especially when streaming media from my pc.
So far this thing can stream mkv, vob, avi, flac, and mp3/mp4s with no issues.
I don’t have the best router, and the connection has always been solid.

As far as apps go, most of them that I’ve downloaded have worked so far. Youtube and dropbox is pretty sweet on it.
I also picked up the air mouse KDLINKS AM01 Air Mouse Motion Controller – Black for it and it just makes things so much more pleasurable.
The pointer is huge and very smooth in operation.

I’m a big fan of KDLINKS media players (also own HD700) and of course their outstanding support. For a hundred bucks, you just cannot go wrong with this new gadget.

UPDATE: I figured out how to use my android cell phone (note 2) as remote to control this player! It’s very simple to do and gives me another way to navigate around. This thing is getting better and better as I keep on discovering new features!

Ever since I used KDLINKS HD700, I became a huge fan of this company. I was looking for a good Android 4.x based media player/smart system. I tried a few devices in the past and had horrible experience. While surfing Amazon, I came across this newly released Android based device from KDLINKs. Going by the previous experience, it didn’t take me seconds to order this product.

After received it, it surpassed all my expectations. Amazing product with a great quality. I love the ease with which you can have all the Android apps on this device and enjoy it on big TV with 1080P picture quality. GUI is great. It has tons of features. It is not just an Android device, it is a great media player too through which you can play almost any video, audio, pictures files from USB drives and SD cards. Its decoding capabilities for media play are much better than well renowned brands like Western Digital, Apple Media Receiver, Roku, etc. I am an electronics freak and own all these devices. That’s why I can tell you the difference.

With its dual core CPU capabilities, it’s really fast and operations can be performed smoothly. My kids have been playing several games and they just love this device. And as a bonus, you can have a remote control app on your cell phone through which you can control this device very easily. This is a superstar for me. I might buy one more for my second TV. In short, I am thrilled to have this device. If you are looking for an Android based Media Player then don’t waste your surfing websites and looking for better options. Trust me, I wasted a lot of time and tried three, I feel like throwing them in trash now.

I got this android player for about 10 days and I am very happy with it. It’s very easy to use, UI is the best I can find.

The A100 comes with a standard remote which can do all operations on the player. I also bought their recommended AM01 air mouse. With this air mouse, I feel it gives me 10x more fun on the player, much easier to navigate. I even used this AM01 mouse play a “fishing” game for several hours. Very satisfied.

I have tried couple apps: Youtube, Netflix, eBay, CNN, Flipboard, Instagram, Flixster, Chrome Browser, PPTV, PPS and some games. XBMC installed successfully on this player. I can set up my Galaxy Note 2 cell phone as a remote & touchpad to control this A100 (Need to scan the barcode in the setup menu and install a small app)

Beside those apps, I also tested my movie collections from a hard drive. It works with most formats: MKV, AVI, MP3, MP4, VOB, but not ISO (google said it’s the limitation of android). The playback quality is very good.

The player comes with built in wireless n wifi, the speed is good enough for me. I can watch Netflix without any problem.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. Thank you for the good product.

With new firmware and monthly XMBC works great

For the first several weeks I wasn’t sure about the A100. Sure Netflix plays well but I still can’t navigate it very well. If the videos you want to watch are off the screen to the right you simply can’t scroll to them to watch. You can scroll but none of the thumbnails update. Moreover, hulu plus won’t play at all. I simply get an error message while audio plays fine. Weird. Also, out of the box XBMC stutters with HD video.

That all said, when I upgraded to the latest firmware 4.2.2 and updated XBMC to the latest monthly (August 30th I believe) XBMC now plays HD video very very well. For my main use as an XBMC client I am very happy. I wish navigating netflix worked better but I can chose a show on my phone and then it will show up on the menu where I can access it so that is ok. Once I can get netflix working better I’ll give it 5 stars.

If you avoid the bloatware, this is worth every penny! A great Android media device!

Android has become a very popular operating system due to its open source mentality. Smart devices from phones and tablets, to routers and TVs. kdLinks has made the KDLINKS A100 Android Jelly Bean Dual Core XBMC Smart 1080P Streaming HD TV Media Player to suit users who want to change their dumb TV into a Smart TV.

Inside the package is the TV Media player, an HDMI cord, a remote control, an AC adapter, an AV Cable, a power supply, and an instruction manual. I was very excited when I opened the box. This device is smaller than any DVD player that I owned, and no matter what bloatware was attached to this device, the Android OS is the backbone of the media player, which means I could use several of my favorite apps.

The included HDMI cable is 60 inches. The cord is thick gauge, and casing for the connector is a thick plastic, and the connector is plated silver. The overall construction of the HDMI cord seems durable.

The other video connector is 3.5mm to RCA is 47 inches long. This is a unique cord, as I don’t have any other RCA to 3.5mm connectors. If your TV requires an RCA connector and this wire is lost, damage, or stolen, it will be very difficult to find a replacement.

The AC adapter is 40 inches long with a 2.5 x 1 x 1.5 inch brick at the end of the adapter. I like that this cord is long, but I don’ like the AC brick at the outlet as it blocks neighboring outlets.

The remote included with this device looks like any other media remote. One power button and setup button are at the top, followed by play/pause, rewind and fast forward buttons, 0-9 buttons, then Info, home, and menu are on a rubber square, with 4 arrows and OK in the middle, on the bottom are mute, volume up and down, and 4 colorful multifunctional buttons. The included remote looks functional for a normal TV, but not as the main remote for this device. For the A100 I am using the KDLINKS AM01 Air Mouse Motion Controller – Black as the remote for this device.

The media player is a little bigger than my tablet at 9.4 x 8.6 x 2.7 inches and is moderately light at 2.6 pounds. The material is a mat black, which is great as it does not attract fingerprints. The front has a spot for IR remotes, a blue LED to indicate the device is powered on, the kdLinks logo, and “Smart Home Media Center” with the Android logo under it. The left side has two USB ports, and an SD card slot for adding extra memory to the device. The back has two antennae, each 5 inches tall, a USB port, an Ethernet port, a HDMI port, a 3.5mm port for the RCA connection, and the 12V DC in.

Specifications:
* OS: Andriod 4.1 with stable performance;
* Dual Core, Cortex A9 RK3066, 1.6Ghz CPU , Coupled with 8GB nand flash, give you a fly video stream experience.
* RAM: 1 GB DDR3 ; ROM: 8GB NAND Flash;
* Support play video files from stored in your USB flash drive, external HDD up to 2TB or SD/MMC/MS card .
* Built-in 802.11b/g/n WiFi ,with two antenna,LAN (100M RJ45)
* Support all Android network applications, such as Movie play application up to 1920X1280, Games application(3D), VoIP / Skype;
* XBMC hardware decoding supported, watch high definition videos without hassle.
* Google Play; Download thousands of applications from android market.
* Air play and phone control / share: allows you to share photos,viideo in mobile to TV via this player. Support your iphone, ipad, android device to control the player.
* Support USB Webcam supported;
* Multi-language OSD and user-friendly OSD control;

The hardware is overall very good. I like that there is at least at decent amount of ram and a 8GB hard drive. I am now going to review the software and compatibility of this device.

Home UI:
When you turn on your device, you start at the home UI. At first glance, it looks like a jumbled mess. I have uploaded 10 product photos of me using this device. The clock at the left top corner is in military time and isn’t configurable to 12H (but the time is accurate), as well as the weather. When you enter the weather interface there is no place to customize your location, even when Android detects your location.

The tiles on the front page are cute, until you find out that you can’t remove them. The desktop at the left hand side cannot be changed, which leaves you to place you favorite apps in “FAV, Video, and Browser” tabs. Each tab has the ability to place 7 of your favorite apps. After you figure this out, you can easily place your favorite apps without the need to keep searching your “Desktop” for them.

Desktop:
Whenever you download a new program, and the media center detects the app, it will then popup with “Where do you want to place this App?” with the options of “Media, Games, Tools, Social, or Other”. These tabs aren’t customizable, so many apps will fall into the “Other” category. The default apps that came with the OS aren’t able to uninstall, or able to be removed from desktop. Thus eMediaCenter, Settings, Flixter, and CNN will always be on the left hand side where the main desktop apps are.

Settings:
Settings can either be changed from the Home UI “Setup” tab, or the Settings app. The settings for both apps basically do the same thing, whatever is the preference of the customer. The main difference for the Settings app is that you are able to use this Android device as a range extender, which is a good hidden feature.

eHomeMediaCenter:

Permissions-
* Read email attachments
* Modify or delete contents of your SD Card
* Connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
* Full network access
* View Network connections
* View wi-fi connections
* Run at startup
* Draw over other apps
* Allow wi-fi multicast reception
* Prevent tablet from sleeping
* Modify system settings
* Test access to protected storage
Of all the default apps, this is the one that I never heard of. The app doesn’t seem to take more privileges than it needs to. It isn’t very polished in my opinion as choosing options seems glitch, but at least this device runs on android, so finding alternatives won’t be very hard.

Video:
The default video player app on this Android device is really good. It will scan all existing SD and USB devices (I used a micro SD card inside an SD adapter and WD 1TB WD Elements Portable USB 3.0 Hard Drive Storage). It would first load the first few seconds of each video to give you an idea of what it is about, if you hover your mouse over the videos you can get a preview of the video without clicking into it. I actually prefer the default video player than BS Player.

Compatibility:
The compatibility annoyed me, as most of my apps worked: Google Music, Plex, Netflix, BS Player, Pandora, Candy Crush, Crunchy Roll, PowerAmp, PocketCast, Comic Rack Free. Many apps only wanted me to download the Tablet version (Amazon), and other apps were incompatible (iHeartRadio, Aamzon app store, and any Google TV app).

The incompatibility with the Amazon App store annoyed me the most, as I have downloaded several apps through the app store. I would keep getting errors about the SD card, so none of the apps I have purchased would download. The iHeartRadio, even when manually installed wouldn’t work. I was disappointed that two of these apps didn’t work but it was only a minority. The majority of the apps made this player very entertaining, and I was very satisfied by this.

General use and browsing:
After I set which apps would be placed in the Home UI, and set this player with all the Google Default apps, I really enjoyed myself. The air mouse made it very enjoyable, except when I needed to type anything, which I will probably attach a wireless keyboard in the future. I realized that I couldn’t go to home whenever I wanted, and instead had to hit “Back” until I reached the Home UI. I also realized that I never saw any notifications. During the entire time of testing I never lagged, so the ram was sufficient for this device. The bloatware from this product was expected, as all Android devices have some, except Nexus devices. I was able to successfully use this player for what it was intended for, for media, and I believe it is worth every penny. The extra compatibility to my apps and games, and range extender is icing on the cake.

Closing:
I recommend this product to anyone that is searching for a Media Center with Android capabilities. Because of the bloatware that isn’t configurable, I give this product 4 out of 5 stars.

Pros:
+ Based on Android OS, which means several apps can be downloaded, in addition to being a media player.
+ Able to use this as a range extender under Android settings.
+ Default video player has a great interface. I prefer this interface than BS Player. (See reviewer pictures)
+ Home has 3 tabs that can each have 7 of your favorite apps.
+ Not very large media player, and moderately light.
+ Includes space for 3 USBs and one SD card. Able to connect my WD 1TB WD Elements Portable USB 3.0 Hard Drive Storage to this device.
+ Not a fingerprint magnet.

Cons:
- Home and Desktop UI looks like a hot mess. Desktop, weather, and clock aren’t configurable.
- Couldn’t multitask by hitting Home. I had to hit “Back” until I got to the Home UI.
- Couldn’t see notifications.
- Most of the third party apps don’t look polished. Only default app I prefer using is Video.
- Main remote included with this device looks good as a universal remote but not for this android device; Get an air mouse for this device, such as KDLINKS AM01 Air Mouse Motion Controller – Black.
- RCA cord is difficult to replace if lost, damage, or stolen.
- AC adapter blocks neighboring outlets.

I was provided a sample in exchange for an honest and thorough review.

KDLINKS A100

By JK
Recently purchased this player and have to say i am very much impressed. I am a novice and Eric (POC for questions and upgrade to Jelly Bean) was of great assistance ensuring i was using the player to its potential. Worked out of the box and I then added XBMC (the whole reason i purchased it) and then upgraded to Jelly Bean (really was easy) and saw even more utilization out of the player. I had purchased this player and another manufacturers player too, my intent was to give both a try and then return the one least preferred. Based upon the ease of use and impression so far i have decided to return the other box and purchase a second A100.
I am gving this a 5 star for several reasons, ease of use, ease of upgrade, excellent WIFI reception and playback, and outstanding customer support. I am not an expert and have basic skills at best, this player is well worth the money especially combined with XBMC.
Wooww, nice product! I want to share this product!
